"We have also a more sure word of prophecy; to which you do well that you take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of one's own interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit," (II Peter 1:19-21).

Easton’s Bible Dictionary defines prophecy as “A miracle of knowledge, a declaration or description or representation of something in future, beyond the power of human sagacity to foresee, discern, or conjecture.” Prophecies, therefore, is the manifestation of the spirit of God and should not be in anyway attributed to human intelligence at any circumstances. Prophecies are meant to edify, exhort and comfort the body of Christ according to Apostle Paul’s revelation from God (I Cor.12:6-11; I Cor. 14:3).

All believers who are spirit filled have been endowed with the ability to prophecy. “For you may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted,” (I Cor. 14:31). The word of the Angel to John in Revelation 19:30 is very significant for our understanding of prophecy. Instructing John not to bow to him, the angel informed John that, the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of Prophecy. Do you have the testimony of Jesus? Good, then you should be able to prophecy.

Prophecy is not only limited to reading the scriptures and preaching from the read passage. In prophecy, the prophetic individual needs to hear what the Lord is saying at that particular instant and declaring the Rhema word of God with neither compromise nor over-qualification of what the Lord is saying.

Sometimes, there is so much pressure among the prophetic individuals leading to competition. Each feels they need to give a better word than the other to make them look good. Or sometimes, they just feel they have to speak a word from the lord, even when the lord has not spoken. Unfortunately, such individuals give good messages, coined by their own thoughts and understanding. It is good to be honest when in prophecy line or room ministering to people. If the lord has not spoken, do not say "The lord told me to tell you...," and do not feel bad either. After all, the Lord knows the person more than you do, and so He can address that need without your help. Nevertheless, just pray for a particular need they have and ask the Holy Spirit to minister to them even as they left your presence.

Many prophetic people miss what the Lord is telling them to do because of their fear of being called a false prophet if the prophecy did not come to pass. When you are scared of prophesying from the faint impressions and nudges the lord gives you, several people will not only miss their appointment or warning as a result of your disobedience, but your growth and confidence in prophetic ministry will take too long than it ought.

You will be amazed at what will happen when you obey the faint impressions or recurrent thoughts the Holy Spirit brings to you. Again, you do not have to be in a “Super Spiritual Mood” by saying “Thus Saith the Lord.” You could just say “I feel to praying for you this way, or that way.” Or you could say “I feel like the Lord is saying this .....”

God has not stopped talking and he does not intend to do so. In prayer closets, home meetings, and Churches there needs to be expectation to hear from the Lord and to prophesy the heart of God to the people, land and the nations. The testimony of Jesus is the Spirit of prophecy residing within a spirit filled believer (Rev. 19:30b). As utter the oracle of God, do not forget Paul's words: we know and prophesy in part (I Cor. 13:9). In other words, we may not have all the answers and complete revelations to the word given, but that is the beauty. That way, we have the platform to keep trusting God for a deeper revelation.
