Prophets: Individuals who hear from the Lord

Prophecy and Prophets are two different things which should not be confused. All spirit filled believers can and should prophecy (I Cor. 14:1-5, 31), but it does not necessarily mean they are prophets. The office of the Prophet is exclusively part of the five fold ministry, it is a full time office ordained by God just as the spiritual office of Apostles, Evangelists, Teachers and Pastors (I Cor. 12:28-30; Eph. 4:11-12).
The word “Prophet” comes from Hebrew ‘Nabi’ meaning “to bubble forth, as from a fountain,” (Easton’s Bible Dictionary). Though “Nabi” is the most common word used for prophets in Hebrew, two other words are as well utilized: “Ra ‘ah” and “Chozeh”, both meaning “Seers,” (I Sam. 9:9; II Sam. 24:11; I Chr. 29:29). “Kosem” is another word, but used for falls prophets; it is translated to English as “Diviner,” (Joshua 13:22).
Prophets and prophetess are men and women of God under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit fortell the future, secrets of people’s hearts and who reveal the will of God as to current events and duties. Prophets according to the American Tract Society, “incite to duty, call to repentance and reformation, instruct kings and announce the judgment of the Lord.” They help the priest to instruct people in their maturation in God. They carry the heart of God to the people as his ambassadors. The Prophets and Prophetess utter or prophecy what they hear and perceive from the Lord.
Prophets receive messages from the lord through visions, trances, dreams, impressions and hearing audible voice of the Lord which is either internal or external.
Seers are individuals who gaze into the realms of the spirit, the future and the past as the Holy Spirit enabled them. They often see pictures (stilled images) and sometimes moving images just like watching football on HD TV. Yet often, God do not use the ecstatic mode to communicate with and through the prophets. He mostly use a very simple, faint voice or impression which many people miss. It’s a mistake to think, ‘if a message is not received from the Lord in a dramatic manner, it’s not of the Lord.’ On the other hand, dramatic messages should not be cast away due to the ecstatic nature of the prophetic individual.
Individuals who are very prophetic need to pay close attention to their five senses which is a reflection of spiritual senses. This is not an encouragement to sensationalism, because we live by faith not by our feelings or sight (II Cor. 5:7). However, God uses our spiritual senses and perception to communicate His message. As one grows in the prophetic, they soon drop questions like “how do I know this is really from God?” or “Is this just me imagining?” It may take time to sharpen your understanding as you mature in the prophetic. The effectiveness of what the prophetic persons are called to do depends on their ability to sit with God. The Holy Spirit positions, tunes and adjusts their spiritual antenna to receive signals from heaven.
If you are not receiving clear messages, or perhaps you are wondering whether the message is really from God, from the Devil or from your own imaginations. I implore you to sit with the Lord and ask the Holy Spirit to grant you understanding. All who sit with the master have always been amazed at his instructions and leading.
Prophets may not be accepted by a local congregation, but it does not mean they would stop hearing from the lord and delivering God’s message. We could never talk about prophetic ministry and ignore dreams and visions. Both are impressions the lord brought into the mind of his servants while the individual is either asleep or awake.
